The Effect of Supernova Asymmetry on Coalescence Rates of Binary Neutron Stars

چکیده
We study the effect of the kick velocity – neutron star spin alignment observed in young radio pulsars on the coalescence rate of binary neutron stars. The effect is shown to be especially strong for large kick amplitudes and tight alignments, reducing the galactic rate of binary neutron star coalescences up to an order of magnitude with respect to the rates calculated for random kicks. The spin-kick correlation also leads to much narrower NS spinorbit misalignments compared to random kicks.

An Upper Limit on the Coalescence Rate of Double Neutron-Star Binaries in the Galaxy
In the context of assessing the detectability of the coalescence of two neutron stars (NS) by currently built gravitational-wave experiments, we present a way of obtaining an upper limit to the coalescence rate in the Galaxy. We consider the NS/NS progenitors just before the second supernova explosion. By combining our theoretical understanding of orbital dynamics at NS formation with methods o...
متن کاملRunaway Velocities of Stellar Components Originating from Disrupted Binaries via Asymmetric Supernova Explosions
We present analytical formulae to calculate the dynamical effects of asymmetric supernova explosions which disrupt a binary system. These formulae are applied to Monte Carlo simulations of asymmetric supernovae in a large number of binaries. The expected velocities of runaway neutron stars and companion stars are calculated as a function of separation and component masses, prior to the explosio...
متن کاملSpin and Isospin Asymmetry, Equation of State and Neutron Stars
In the present work, we have obtained the equation of state for neutron star matter considering the in uence of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin state. We have also investigated the structure of neutron stars. According to our results, the spin asymmetry stiens the equation of state and leads to high mass for the neutron star.
متن کاملNeutron star spin-kick velocity correlation effect on binary neutron star coalescence rates and spin-orbit misalignment of the components
We study the effect of the neutron star spin – kick velocity alignment observed in young radio pulsars on the coalescence rate of binary neutron stars. Two scenarios of the neutron star formation are considered: when the kick is always present and when it is small or absent if a neutron star is formed in a binary system due to electroncapture degenerate core collapse. The effect is shown to be ...
متن کاملThe origin of single radio pulsars
By comparing relative rates of supernovae versus formation rates of single radio pulsars, recycled pulsars, binary pulsars and X-ray binaries we put strong limits on the progenitors of radio pulsars and on the requirement of an asymmetry in the supernova. The assumption that radio pulsars are only formed in type Ib and type Ic supernovae from interacting binaries (Iben & Tutukov 1996) breaks do...
